The news recently hit Instagram in an unexpected way: the young British athlete who took gold in the Tokyo Olympics in the synchronized 10-meter diving was spotted knitting in the spectators’ stands. A photo of the brown-eyed, athletically built handsome man diligently wielding knitting needles appeared on his Instagram account @gentlemensgram. As it turned out, in addition to sports, Olympian Tom Daly is passionate about knitting sweaters, sweaters and other warm things. However, his family is as unconventional as his hobby.
Athlete, knitter and philanthropist
The Olympic champion admitted to the Internet users that on that day he was knitting a sweater for a French bulldog, his buddy’s pet. The athlete even created a separate Instagram account to showcase his knitwear. It is called @madewithlovebytomdaley, “Made with Love by Tom Daley. The page is full of colorful cardigans and sweaters. He knits for himself, for his friends, for their dogs and, of course, for loved ones.
Daley is active in charity work. For example, he knitted a cozy, warm plaid for a five-year-old boy suffering from a rare genetic disease to support him before he is sent to hospice care. He also periodically raffles off his knits among his subscribers.
The winner is chosen at random. As the Olympian knitter explains, he is ready to send the gift anywhere in the world. You have to pay a fee for participation – two pounds. Daley sends all the money he receives to the Brain Tumor Foundation. The athlete’s father died from this terrible disease, and, by the way, it was he who many years ago determined the fate of his son, offering him to do diving.
Tom knits not only men’s clothes, but also women’s (eg, dresses), and children’s, and even recently tied a sofa for his mother’s cats.
